Portraits of the Living: Harold

Bronze with Mixed Media

11”x38”

2019

It feels impossible to create an accurate portrait. A portrait is much more than just what a person looks like; it’s a representation of the relationship between the artist and that person. This is my grandpa, Harold, as I see him, through symbols of what creates him: his likes, habits, and scent. I can’t capture the buzzing his hearing aid makes when we hug, or how warm his house is, or his stories of Okinawa, Cheyenne, and Escondido. But this collection of trinkets and memories is a way to show at least some of the love I have for him.
